The Greek adjective σκεθρός ‘exact, careful’ may be derived from one the roots meaning ‘to cut’ posited for Proto-Indo-European (*[s]ker-, *skerH-, *skerdh-), if one assumes a dissimilation of the two rhotics in the putative pre-form *sker(H)dhro- that is attested in other Greek words, too, and a semantic shift from ‘to cut’ either to ‘distinguishing, knowing’ or to ‘short, precise’ as in Latin praecisus
