La vida y la obra de Juan A. Ortega y Medina, his- toriador nacido en Málaga en 1913, se analiza en este ensayo desde las diferentes perspectivas te- máticas que ofrece su obra con el propósito de dar a conocer su pensamiento y su legado histo- riográfico. Autor de más de quince libros sobre la historia de España, Estados Unidos, la Reforma protestante y de literatura viajera, Ortega también escribió sobre la estética de J. J. Winckelmann y acerca de Humboldt y Lutero. Este ensayo re- flexiona sobre los aspectos más importantes que abordó Ortega y explica su interés por ellos como resultado de una vivencia particular y de su pro- pia experiencia histórica como exiliado después de la Guerra Civil española (1936-1939), en la que el personaje luchó del lado republicano. La inquietud de explicar la historia de España tras ese doloroso acontecimiento que lo marcó de por vida —como a la mayoría de los compatriotas que sufrieron la misma experiencia— lo motivó a escribir varios trabajos que se han convertido en referentes para los estudiosos de la historia de este país en particular y de la historia universal. El ensayo pone su atención en cada temática esbo- zada por Ortega y explica las razones de su interés y los resultados del estudio que hizo sobre ellos.

The life and work of Juan A. Ortega y Medina, an historian who was born in Málaga in 1913, is analyzed in this essay from different approaches to the issues he studied. The aim is to show his thou- ght and his historic legacy. He was the author of more than fifteen books on the History of Spain, of the United States, the Protestant Reformation and Voyagers, but he also wrote on the aesthetic ideas of J. J. Winckelmann, on Humboldt and Lu- ther. This essay studies the most important aspects on Ortega’s approach and explains his interest on them as a result of his particular personal experien- ce and his own historical drama as an exile after the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), where he fought on the side of the republican army. His interest to study the history of Spain after that painful event that marked him for life, together with the great majority of his fellow Spanish companions who su- ffered the same experience, motivated him to write various works which have become main references for those interested in Spanish and world history.
This essay puts its attention in each topic set forth by Ortega and explains the reasons of his interest and the results of the studies he made on them.
