Resumen de El suave yugo de Cervantes: Latinidad, hispanidad y soberanía lingüística en Hispanoamérica

A partir del reciente manifiesto "Por una soberanía idiomática" (2013), firmado por decenas de escritores e intelectuales argentinos, el presente artículo recuerda el debate en torno a la necesidad de emanciparse culturaly lingüísticamente de España que tuvo lugar tras la independencia de las colonias hispano-americanos, y pone de manifiesto cómo dicho debate influyó en el desarrollo de los conceptos de latinidad e hispanidad desde finales del siglo XIX. Frente a una concepción antagónica de lo español y de lo cosmopolita, las figuras del peruano Ventura García Calderón y de Jorge Luis Borges sirven para demostrar que la apropiación de una tradición extranjera –la francesa y la inglesa, respectivamente –permiten una reapropiación de la tradición española más allá de la dialéctica colonial.

Taking as a starting point the recent manifesto "In defense of linguistic sovereignty", signed by dozens of Argentinean writers and scholars, this article evokes the debate on the need of cultural and linguistic emancipation which took place after the independence of the former Hispano-American colonies and shows how this debate influenced the development of the concepts of Latinity and Hispanity since the end of the XIX century. Departing from an antagonistic vision of the Spanish heritage versus cosmopolitism, the figures of the Peruvian Ventura García Calderón and Jorge Luis Borges prove that the appropriation of a foreign tradition –the French and the English, respectively –allow a reappropriation of the Spanish tradition beyond the colonial dialectic.
