Antes de la objetividad: Elogio y crítica a la manera de escribir historia según tres intelectuales del siglo de oro

    La presente contribución centra su interés en el horizonte cultural de la modernidad temprana en España y tiene como objetivo describir los procedimientos historiográficos que normaron la escritura del pasado como disciplina sistemática y confiable, antes de la aparición de su criterio metodológico predominante, la objetividad. Para ello se analizan las disposiciones metodológicas y sus críticas, relativas a la manera correcta de escribir historia; así como las vías propuestas para alcanzar la verdad en la narración acerca del pasado. El denominado Siglo de Oro de la literatura española sirve en este sentido de contexto intelectual, ya que permite utilizar con este fin tres autores de forma comparativa. Este aporte finaliza señalando que desde la literatura surgió durante el siglo XVII un embate a la tradición historiográfica existente, que si bien no alcanzó a renovar las formas como se escribía historia, proporcionó sin embargo los elementos que a la postre prepararán el arribo de la objetividad como imperativo metodológico.

    This paper deals with the description of historiographical outlines established at the beginning of the early modern period in Spain with the aim to direct the writing of history towards a systematic and reliable fashion. My intention is to show the methodological provisions and critics that were expressed during that time, a time when objectivity had not yet irrupted into Europe’s scientific landscape. In order to achieve this goal, I will analyze a group of texts, which were written in order to teach about the importance of history and to present the historian with a way to succeed in the task of telling the truth about the past. Based on a comparison between the points of view of three Spanish intelectuals from the so called Golden Century generation, this article concludes with the explanation how criticism coming specifically from the domain of literature entered the field of history, provoking a profound change in the perception of morals, truth and impartiality in the 17th century and paving the way for the further arrival of objectivity.
