    En la Monarquía Hispana las galerías de virreyes adornaron las salas de los diversos palacios reales de sus reinos y estados. En Nápoles, México, Cagliari o Valencia hallamos estos conjuntos de retratos que simbolizan la institución virreinal. En este trabajo proponemos algunas claves para interpretar estos repertorios de retratos utilizándolos como indicio que ilustra la transformación de los virreinatos a lo largo del siglo XVII. Las revueltas de 1640 y 1647 fueron ante todo rebeliones provinciales en las que se puso en cuestión la estructura compuesta de la Monarquía atendiendo sobre todo a la clave que articulaba todo el sistema político, institucionalizándose el virreinato. No es casual que las salas de virreyes que hallamos en los palacios reales sean un tipo de estancia que se crea después de 1650, respondiendo a nuevas necesidades representativas que coinciden con el nuevo estatuto concedido a los virreyes durante el proceso de reconfiguración de la Monarquía.

    The galleries of portraits of viceroys adorned the halls of the royal palaces in the kingdoms and states of the Spanish Monarchy. In Naples, Mexico, Cagliari or Valencia we find these sets of portraits that symbolize the institution of the Viceroyalty. In this paper, we propose some suggestions for interpreting these repertoires of portraits using them as an indication that illustrates the transformation of the viceroyalties throughout the seventeenth century. The revolts of 1640 and 1647 were first of all provincial rebellions, which put into demand the composed structure of the Monarchy. It disturbs the whole viceroyalties, that articulated the complete political system, institutionalizing the viceroyalty. It is not by casual that the galleries of viceroys’ portraits, which we found in the royal palaces, are a type of chamber that is created after 1650, responding to new representative needs. It shows the new status granted to the viceroys during the process of reconfiguration of the Monarchy.
