The "De consecratione lapidum": A Previously Unknown Thirteenth-Century Version of the "Liber Almandal Salomonis", Newly Introduced with a Critical Edition and Translation

    This article presents a critical edition of the Liber de consecratione lapidum which is shown to be a previously unrecognized version of the Liber Almandal Salomonis. The Almandal was among the first texts of Arabic magic to be translated into Latin during the twelfth century. Long ignored by specialists in medieval and early modern magic and religion, the Almandal has recently attracted scholarly attention due in part to a growing awareness of its importance to the Western esoteric tradition and its connection to the Ars notoria and the “School of Bologna.” Yet, despite recent advances, much of the text’s history remains obscure. The Arabic original is presumed lost, and so far the only witnesses to the Latin text have been a small group of fifteenth-century manuscripts which present an incomplete picture of the Almandal’s textual history, one divided between an older tradition and a later tradition that had already undergone a long process of Christian acculturation. In contrast, the Liber de consecratione lapidum survives in three manuscripts dating to the thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. Although these manuscripts do not preserve the oldest form of the text, they do present a unique version, one that sheds some much needed light on the history of the Almandal’s Christian reception. The edition is accompanied by an English translation and notes; both are preceded by an introduction in which I describe the manuscripts of the De consecratione, the textual tradition of the Almandal, and the points of contact between the De consecratione and the different versions of the Almandal. In the conclusion to the introduction, I attempt to provide some coordinates for situating the De consecratione within the wider matrix of Almandal texts and venture some suggestions for modifying the chronology of the Almandal’s Christian elaboration.

    Cet article présente une édition critique du Liber de consecratione lapidum qui, nous le démontrons, représente une version jusqu’ici non-identifiée du Liber Almandal Salomonis. L’Almandal est l’un des premiers textes arabes traitant de la magie ayant été traduit en latin au cours du XIIe siècle. Longtemps négligé par les chercheurs étudiant la magie et la religion au Moyen Age et à l’époque moderne, l’Almandal a récemment fait l’objet d’un intérêt renouvelé, en raison d’une plus grande reconnaissance de son importance au sein de la tradition ésotérique occidentale et de ses liens avec l’Ars notoria et « l’école de Bologne ». En dépit de ces développements récents, l’histoire de ce texte demeure en grande partie nébuleuse. L’original en langue arabe aurait été perdu et jusqu’à aujourd’hui, les seuls témoins du texte latin consistent en un modeste groupe de manuscrits du XVe siècle, qui brossent un portrait lacunaire de l’histoire textuelle de l’Almandal, un portait divisé entre une tradition plus ancienne et une autre plus tardive, portant la trace d’un long processus d’acculturation chrétienne. Bien que plusieurs manuscrits ne conservent pas la plus ancienne forme du texte, ils présentent néanmoins une version unique qui jette une lumière bienvenue sur l’histoire de la réception chrétienne de l’Almandal. Cette édition est accompagnée d’une traduction en anglais ainsi que de notes; celles-si sont précédées d’une introduction dans laquelle je présente les manuscrits du De consecratione, la tradition textuelle de l’Almandal et les points de contact entre le De consecratione et les différentes versions de l’Almandal. Dans la conclusion de cette introduction, je tente de fournir quelques points de repère pour situer le De consecratione au sein du réseau plus large formé par les textes de l’Almandal. J’offre également quelques suggestions dans le but de réviser la chronologie de l’élaboration chrétienne de l’Almandal.
