Questions of Love and Authorship in Parisinus Latinus 7972: A Previously Unedited Poem and Its Relationship with the "De Ermafrodito"

    Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, MS lat. 7972 (saec. X, France?) is a well attested witness to the works of Horace. After the scribe finished writing the Carmen saeculare on fol. 85r, three and a half leaves remained before the start of the Epistles, which coincided with the beginning of the next gathering. These pages contain a number of poems, the last of which is a rhythmical love poem that has remained unmentioned in scholarship. On fol. 106r, the first lines of the De ermafrodito, which has been attributed to Hildebertus Cenomanensis (1056-1133), appear in the same hand. This article presents the first edition of the anonymous poem, along with a translation and justification of my interpretation of its meaning. It also explores the ramifications of this early witness to the opening of the De ermafrodito.

    Le manuscript lat. 7972 de la Bibliothèque nationale de France, daté du Xe siècle et provenant probablement de France, représente un témoin bien connu de l’oeuvre horatienne. Après que le scribe ait retranscrit le Carmen Seculare au folio 85r, il avait encore trois feuillets et demi à sa disposition avant le début des Epîtres, lesquelles coincidaient avec le début de la prochaine compilation. Ces pages contiennent plusieurs poèmes dont le dernier est un poème d’amour de forme rythmique dont il n’est fait mention nulle part dans la littérature savante. Au folio 106r, la même main a retranscrit les premiers vers du De ermafrodito, lequel est attribué à Hildebertus Cenomanensis (1056-1133). Dans cet article, nous offrons une première édition du poème resté encore inconnu jusqu’à présent, accompagnée d’une traduction et de notes justifiant son interprétation. En outre, nous proposons de mettre en lumière l’importance de cet ancien témoin des premiers vers du De ermafrodito pour la compréhension du poème en général.
