Theories attempting to explain the relation between development and learning may be grouped into three blocks, each with different educational implication: 1) the developmental process is independent of what the child learns; 2) learning is responsible for development; 3) development is the product of the interaction of two fundamental processes, maturation and learning. In an attempt to better explain this relationship Vygotsky proposes the existence of two developmental levels: effective development (psychointellectual functions achieved through a specific process of development), and the area of potential development (what the child is able to do with some help, which is an indication of his/her dvelopmental dynamic). The developmental process thus follows the learning process which occurs in the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD).
