Resumen de Newman, Macintyre y nosotros: agonía y universidades en el siglo XXI

INTRODUCCIÓN. En el año 2009, Alasdair MacIntyre publicó un artículo subtitulado “Aristotle, Newman and us”. El propio MacIntyre se sumaba, así, al creciente interés por la figura de John Henry Newman que, sin embargo, no ha sido puesta de manifiesto por la literatura científica que ha tratado de entender al escocés desde una filosofía de la educación. Este artículo pretende subrayar esa relación con la idea de que puede arrojar nuevos marcos de comprensión sobre la universidad y sus problemáticas actuales. MÉTODO. Metodológicamente, se sitúa en la hermenéutica aplicada a la educación que han defendido Deborah Kerdeman, Randall Curren o Anna Pagès, comprendiendo que esta metodología debe ser puesta en diálogo con el presente de tal forma que los autores no solo resulten interesantes, sino orientativos para nuestro presente. RESULTADOS. Lo que se observa con este artículo es que la influencia de Newman en la filosofía educativa de MacIntyre se produce no a través de los textos estrictamente educativos del beato, sino en aquellos relacionados con el desarrollo de la doctrina y la idea de tradición. DISCUSIÓN. Ahí se observa tanto la influencia como un tipo de universidad que se fundamenta en la comprensión agonística de las tradiciones intelectuales. Un tipo de universidad que, aunque está lejos de poder realizarse institucionalmente, sí puede tomar forma en la existencia de los académicos. Ahí permite comprender problemáticas tales como la teoría curricular, la identidad académica y la relación entre la docencia y la investigación.

INTRODUCTION. En 2009 Alasdair MacIntyre a publié un article intitulé “Aristotle, Newman and us”. MacIntyre rejoignait ainsi l’intérêt suscité par la figure de John Henry Newman, fait que n’a pas été mis en évidence par la littérature scientifique essayant de comprendre l’écossais du point de vue de la philosophie de l’éducation. Cet article vise à souligner comment cette appro-che peut favoriser une perspective nouvelle sur le rôle de l’université et ses problématiques actue-lles. MÉTHODE. Sur le plan méthodologique on continue la ligne herméneutique défendue par Deborah Kerdeman, Randall Curren et Anna Pagès en étant conscients que cette méthodologie doit être mettre en relation avec le moment présent de telle façon que les auteurs deviennent pertinents pour orienter notre temps présent. RÉSULTATS. L’influence de Newman sur la philo-sophie de l’éducation de MacIntyre est patente dans les textes qui ont un caractère doctrinal et ceux qui sont liées à l’idée de tradition. DISCUSSION. Il est possible d’observer l’influence d’un type d’université basée sur la compréhension agonistique des traditions intellectuelles. Un type d’université qui, néanmoins, est loin d’être mis en place, pourra prendre forme dans l’exercice des professeurs universitaires. Sous cet angle d’analyse, il est possible de comprendre les probléma-tiques suscités par la théorie didactique, l’identité académique et la relation entre l’enseignement et la recherche.

INTRODUCTION. In the year 2009, Alasdair MacIntyre published an article subtitled “Aristotle, Newman and Us”. MacIntyre himself added, thus, to the growing interest in the figure of John Henry Newman, which, however, has not been revealed by the scientific literature that has tried to understand the MacIntyre’s philosophy of education. This article aims to highlight that relationship with the idea that it can shed new frames of understanding about the university and its current problems. METHOD. It is situated in the philosophical-educational understandings pertaining to the hermeneutics applied to education defended by Deborah Kerdeman, Randall Curren or Anna Pagès, understanding that this methodology must be put into dialogue with the present in such a way that the authors are not only interesting, but also provide us with the appropriate guidelines. RESULT. What MacIntyre observes with this article is that the influence of Newman in the MacIntyre’s educational philosophy is done not through the strictly educational texts, mainly condensed in his The Idea of a University defined and illustred, but through those related to the development of the doctrine and the idea of tradition. DISCUSSION. one can see not only the influence but also a kind of university that, although far from being able to be carried out institutionally, is able to take shape in the academic existence. It allows for the understanding of problems such as curricular theory, academic identity and the relationship between teaching and research.
