The alliance between philosophy and cinema as shown by the work of Stanley Cavell, recently deceased, and that of Robert B. Mitchell Leisen’s cinema maintains its validity by the subtlety with which it unites the quality of human love and the construction of a just and democratic society. Hold Back the Dawn (1941) collects his previous work and projects it almost as a “message cinema”. Here, together with the main plot of the marriage of convenience that is transformed and redeemed, Leisen presents three happy cases of people who find refuge – a hairdresser welcomed as a citizen of honor, a German family thanks to the birth of a child beyond the border, besides of the redeemed fraudulent marriage. Another awaits – a Belgian family that blesses the civic ideals of the United States and Mexico that welcomes them provisionally, without us even contemplating their reception. Finally, another case is silently dramatic: the suicide of a German citizen, in the waiting hotel, at the beginning of the film.
