Resumen de The role of regional organizations in peacekeeping: shared responsibilities, new roles, and old uncertainties

Lucas J. Ruiz Díaz

  • Regional organizations (ROs) have deployed missions and operations on the field to back the United Nations' (UN) efforts to maintain international peace and security. As practice has shown, their support remains essential to complement the UN at the regional level and prevent the escalation of the conflict. However, several legal and institutional loopholes undermine the full potential of this cooperation between the UN and ROs. Even though some years ago the ambiguity of the UN Charter allowed for a flexible implementation of its provisions, the current international security environment demands for stronger, clearer rules to avoid duplications and overlaps, and to exploit the full potential of this kind of collaboration, as the example of some ROs has demonstrated.
