  • Objective: Identify the use of statins in primary prevention in a Health Area. To encourage rational use of statins providing the professionals with certain tools enabling the assessment of cardiovascular risk and the pertinence of treatment.

Method: A non-randomized uncontrolled intervention study, developed in a primary care setting. Participants were patients with statin dispensation, but not with oral anticoagulants, antiplatelet or antidiabetics. Practitioners were educated on the rational use of statins in primary prevention, as well as the data of the patients under consideration, and the evaluation of a treatment protocol. We measured the number and percentage of patients with assessed statin treatment, those the practitioner considered it was necessary to withdraw the treatment, and the reasons for justifying the treatment.

Main results: We assessed the eligibility of the treatment with statins in 967 patients (44.93%). The practitioner considered it was necessary to withdraw the treatment in 247 of the patients (25.54%). In 45.93% of patients under 75 years, and in 30.69% aged 75 years or older, there was no specified reason that justified the treatment.

Conclusions: The results of the intervention revealed the need to execute assessments and therapeutic adequacy in patients taking statins for primary prevention, and the significance of the collaborative working relationship between physicians and pharmacists in the pharmacotherapy process
