Desde que Van Asperen de Boer, en los años setenta del pasado siglo, pusiera a punto la reflectografía infrarroja para el estudio del dibujo subyacente, esta técnica se ha incorporado a los protocolos de análisis de las obras de arte. En los últimos veinte años los equipos de detección se han perfeccionado, facilitando la captura y el ensamblaje de los reflectogramas.
Ahora obtenemos imágenes de alta definición que permiten interpretar con mayor precisión los procesos creativos. Impulsados por estos avances, en el Museo del Prado se han revisado los antiguos exámenes efectuados en pintores como Rafael y, junto a instituciones internacionales, hemos abordado el análisis de la técnica de artistas poco estudiados, como Jacopo Tintoretto y Leonardo da Vinci. Sin embargo, no podemos olvidar que la tecnología no es un fin en sí misma y que la interpretación de los procesos creativos depende tanto del factor humano como del estudio de la superficie pictórica y su interpretación en el contexto de la historia del arte.

Since Van Asperen de Boer, in the 70s of last century developed the infrared reflectography to study the underdrawing in painting, this technique has been incorporated into the analysis protocols of the artworks. In the last 20 years the systems of detection have been improved, facilitating both capture and assembly of reflectograms. Now we get high definition images that allow a more accurate interpretation of the creative processes. Prompted by the developments, at the Museo del Prado has been revised ancient examinations made in painters like Raphael and, together with international institutions, we have addressed the technical analysis of understudied artists as Jacopo Tintoretto and Leonardo da Vinci. However, we cannot forget that explaining creative processes depends on both the human factor as the study of the pictorial surface and its interpretation in the context of art history.
