Maurice Halbwachs desarrolla en este texto una reflexión sobre el método estadístico y su uso en sociología. Ampliamente inspirado por el trabajo de su amigo François Simiand, Halbwachs reclama el descubrimiento de la investigación estadística desde el dominio de las ciencias sociales y cómo, al tratarse de una metodología extremadamente fecunda para la producción de datos, ha sido utilizada también por otras ciencias, sobre todo las ciencias naturales. No obstante, Halbwachs señala, de acuerdo con Simiand, que no deben confundirse los resultados estadísticos que se utilizan en las ciencias naturales con aquellos que le interesan a las ciencias sociales. Porque, ¿en qué se diferencia la investigación estadística cuando se ocupa de un hecho de la naturaleza o de un hecho social? A esta pregunta trata de responder este texto que forma parte de los clásicos de la disciplina sociológica.

Maurice Halbwachs develops in this text a reflection on the statistical method and its use in sociology. Inspired by the work of his friend François Simiand, Halbwachs claimed the discovery of statistical research from the domain of social sciences. As it is also an extremely productive methodology for the production of data, it has also been used by other sciences, especially the natural sciences. However, Halbwachs points out, according to Simiand, that the statistical results used in the natural sciences should not be confused with those interested in the social sciences. How is statistical research different when it is concerned with a fact of nature or of a social fact? This text tries to answer to this question.
