  The purpose of this article is to present our firt-ever translation into Portuguese of the Regiment of Health to Jaume II (The Rules of Health) (1308) by Arnau de Vilanova (c.

  1238-1311), the most prestigious European doctor of his time. He wrote extensively works on medicine, philosophy and theology; in addition, he translated some treatises by Avicenna (c. 980-1037) and Galen (c. 129-216). As well, the article analyzes some of Vilanova´s recommendations for the choosing the best air, his indictments on hygiene and especially his prescription of a good diet, important elements in medieval medicine. Finally, we interpret the Regiment in light of recent bibliography on food history, which will give us the opportunity to demystify nebulous misconceptions about medieval cuisine

  A proposta da palestra é apresentar nossa tradução, inédita em língua portuguesa, da obra As Regras da Saúde a Jaime II (1308) de Arnau de Vilanova (c. 1238-1311), o médico europeu mais prestigiado de seu tempo. Arnau tem vasta obra de escritos médicos, filosóficos e teológicos, além do fato de ter traduzido alguns tratados de Avicena (c. 980- 1037) e de Galeno (c. 129-216). Ademais, abordaremos alguns pontos da obra, tais como as recomendações para a escolha do melhor ar, para uma adequada higiene e, em especial, sua prescrição da boa dieta, elemento fundamental na Medicina medieval. É nossa intenção, ainda, interpretar As Regras também à luz da História da Alimentação, o que nos proporcionará desmitificar nebulosas e errôneas concepções acerca da gastronomia do Medievo.
