    In May 2014, the Belgian Senate was deeply reformed. The 2014 elections were the first ones without a direct election of senators. Instead, the new Senate is completely composed of members of community and regional parliaments and co-opted members. Now the Senate is a chamber of the communities and regions and serves as a platform for discussion and reflection about matters between the different language communities. Since 2014 the Senate only plays a very minor role in the federal legislative process. Unfortunately, the party system seems to be able to influence the goals of the reform.

    Nel Maggio del 2014 il Senato belga è stato profondamente riformato. L’elezione indiretta dei suoi membri nonché un maggiore equilibrio nella rappresentanza degli enti federati avrebbero potuto essere fattori in grado di portare il federalismo belga oltre una prospettiva meramente linguistica. Purtroppo, il sistema dei partiti sembra poter condizionare gli obiettivi della riforma da vanificare il cambiamento sperato.
