  • Resumen
    • In the valencian musical tradition of oral transmission referred to as cant valencià (Valencian song) or cant del valencià (songs of the Valencian) there is a representative repertoire of semi-ornamented or melismatic songs, performed in a particular virtuoso vocal style. Researchers use to call it cant valencià d'estil (Valencian song of style). Its practice covers the central lands of Valencia, form la Plana de Castelló in the North to la Marina in the South. The cant d'estil includes the valencianes de l'u i el dos, valencianes de l'u i el dotze, valencianes de l'u, riberenques, and albaes. From the earliest days there have been specialists in the cant valencià d'estil, singers called cantadors d'estil, who in the mid nineteenth century had already a long tradition, continued to the present time through five artistic generations of noteworthy semiprofessional performers.

The cant valencià, an essential part of Valencian musical culture, is worthy of great attention: because of its artistic, anthropological and historical relevance, it is comparable to other wellknown spanish traditional repertoires which use virtuoso vocal resources -such as flamenco, and the jota aragonesa.
