La gramática española ha solido defender que III única conexión sintáctica entre el verbo y lo que no es verbo es la concordancia en número y persona, establecida con su sujeto. Sin embargo, el análisis de los hechos lingüísticos parece indicar otra cosa. El demostrativo es el instrumento que el homo loquens empleó en primer lugar para significar proximidad o lejanía en el tiempo. Por medio del demostrativo se aproximan o se alejan las realidades determinadas de las que se habla. Es verosímil la hipótesis de que el demostrativo pudo ser el origen de la señalación temporal. Más tarde, la lengua desarrolló la posibilidad de expresar tiempo por medio de las marcas flexivas del verbo. El demostrativo y el verbo son las dos clases de palabras que sirven para aproximar o alejar en el tiempo las realidades y procesos de los que se habla. Entre demostrativo y verbo, en español, se establece una conexión sintáctica y, por lo tanto, de naturaleza gramatical, que se parece mucho a la consecutio temporum.

The Spanish grammar usually defended that the unique connection between the verb and what is not the verb is the agreement in number and person established by its subject. The analysis of linguistic facts seems to show something different, though. The demonstrative is the instrument the homo loquens chose above all to express proximity or distance inside time. Those realities about which speakers talk come closer or move away through the demonstrative, when they were determined beforehand. Thus the hypothesis that the demonstrative could be the origin of the temporal signal is credible. Later, languages developed the possibility of expressing time through the flexional marks of the verb, the tenses. The demonstrative and the verb are the two categories of words used by the speakers to put closer or further in time those realities and processes they talk about. In Spanish, a syntactical connection is established between demonstrative and verb which is therefore of a grammatical nature, very similar to consecutio temporum.
