  The romance-novel, as a modern literary genre, is a recent phenomenon in Guinea Bissau´s literature, begun in the post-colonial era. In spite of the novelty of the genre in Guinea-Bissau´s literary context, we observe that the main authors (Abdulai Sila, Filinto de Barros and Filomena Embaló) share not only Portuguese language, but also more or less common images and themes. Their works treat, in general, the Guinean identity before the battle for freedom and the ways to the nation in the post-independence. In this article, we will approach, exclusively, Tiara (1999), the novel written by Filomena Embaló by the time of Guinea´s Civil War (1998-1999). Our main concern will be to relate the fictional horizon proposed by the writer to the historical-political context of Guinea-Bissau, from the national liberation movement.

  Regarding this, we will hold a discussion taking into consideration the references, in the storyline, of a romanticized text that draws up the sentimental background involved in an unavoidable problem of identity in the ethno-political order.

  O romance, como gênero literário moderno, é um fenômeno recente na literatura bissau-guineense, iniciado na era pós-colonial. Apesar da novidade do gênero no contexto literário de Guiné-Bissau, notamos que os principais autores (Abdulai Sila, Filinto de Barros e Filomena Embaló) compartilham, além da língua portuguesa, imagens e temas mais ou menos comuns.

  Suas obras tratam, de modo geral, da identidade guineense frente à luta de libertação e aos caminhos da nação no pós-independência. Neste artigo, abordaremos, com exclusividade, Tiara (1999), o romance escrito por Filomena Embaló no auge da guerra civil (1998/1999) guineense.

  Nossa principal preocupação será a de relacionar o horizonte ficcional proposto pela escritora ao contexto histórico-político da Guiné-Bissau, a partir do movimento de libertação nacional. Vamos tentar, nesse sentido, travar uma discussão levando em conta a referencialidade do texto romanesco que, no enredo, elabora uma paisagem sentimental envolvida num incontornável problema de identidade de ordem étnico-político.
