    • Facing the urban: art libraries, graffiti and street art.

Today, the urban is seen as a theme appropriate for conceptualizing the society of the twenty-first century. What, however, is the real contribution of the humanities -and art history- to this debate? And what is, more specifically, the role of art libraries in the face of such a transdisciplinary horizon of expectations? Through the lens of documentary and museum collections created over the last two decades and dedicated to these urban cultures commonly classified under the labels of graffiti and street art, this article examines the place accorded to practices disrespectful of Western aesthetics in art libraries, at a time when the semantic value of the term "art" lost the authority that Western culture bestowed on it in the twentieth century.
