From the History of the Book to the History of Communication When, following Mornet, one tries to understand the ori-gins of the French Revolution, and in particular the role of the « Enlightenment », the two major approaches that emerged more than twenty-five years ago, one working through social history and the other through the philo-sophical analysis of ideologies, do not provide entirely satisfactory answers to the problem. Social transformations, which were taking place throughout Europe, are not in themselves sufficient to explain the peculiarity of the French case, while analyses of discourse perform a social decontextualization leading to excessive autonomy being ascribed to the specific symbolic efficacy of political and philosophical discourses. Between « ideas » and « states of society », one has to take account of the modes of communication, in particular the specifie effects of communication through books, which developed strongly in the pre-revolutionary period and exerts a much stronger symbolic action than simple oral communication.

De l'histoire du livre à l'histoire de la communication S'agissant de comprendre, à la suite de Mornet, les origines de la Révolution française, et notamment le rôle des « Lumières », les deux courants majeurs qui se sont constitués, il y a plus de 25 ans, l'un d'histoire sociale et l'autre d'analyse philosophique des idéologies, n'apportent pas des analyses totalement satisfaisantes à ce problème. Les transformations sociales, très générales en Europe, ne suffisent pas en effet à rendre compte, à elles seules, de la singularité française tandis que les analyses de discours procèdent à une décontextualisa-tion sociale qui conduit à autonomiser trop fortement l'efficacité symbolique propre aux discours politiques et philosophiques. Entre les idées et l'état de la société, il faut prendre en compte les modes de communication et notamment les effets spécifiques de la communication par le livre qui s'est fortement développée dans la période pré-révolutionnaire et possède une action symbolique plus forte que la simple communication orale.

Kommunikation-Geschichte anstatt Buch-Geschichte Der zuerst Mornet zu verdankende Versuch die Ur sprünge der französischen Revolution und darin namentlich die Rolle der Aufklärung besser zu begrei- fen liess vor mehr als 25 Jahren zwei hauptsächliche Strömungen der Forschung entstehen die eine sozial geschichtlich die andere philosophie- und ideologie kritisch die beide zu diesem Thema keine ganz und gar erschöpfende Analyse zu liefern vermochten Die generell in Europa erfolgten sozialen Umwälzungen können in der Tat allein das Spezifische der französi schen Situation nicht hinreichend beschreiben wäh rend die Analysen der Diskurse gewöhnlich zu sehr aus dem sozialen Kontext herausheben und die den politi schen und philosophischen Reden eigene starke sym bolische Wirksamkeit sich allzusehr verselbständigen lassen In diesem Zwischenbereich zwischen Ideen und gesellschaftlicher Realität sollten in die Forschung die Kommunikationsweisen und insbesondere die spe zifischen Wirkungen der Kommunikation durch das Buch miteinbezogen v/erden die sich gerade in der prä-revolutionären Periode stark entwickelt hatte und nachhaltigere symbolische Auswirkungen als die ein fache orale Kommunikation besitzt
