La Semana Santa constituye uno de los principales hitos del calendario litúrgico; sin duda, el más importante de todos, como corresponde a la conmemoración de la Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección del Señor, o sea al núcleo mismo de la fe cristiana. No es esta la ocasión para extenderse en la riqueza de aspectos que su particular relevancia propicia, aunque no está de más recordar su especial significación religiosa y con ella las tradiciones que se han ido forjando y desarrollando a través de los siglos. En consecuencia, es importante recocer una larga trayectoria histórica así como una llamativa implicación social, incluso popular, sobre todo a través de las cofradías y procesiones, que en buena medida protagonizan su celebración y que también representan algunas de sus más singulares manifestaciones, como bien demuestra el caso español.
