Figura crucial de la historia medieval española, rey conquistador y fiel devoto de Dios y de la Virgen. Nacido en 1199, criado por su madre doña Berenguela, fue coronado rey de Castilla en 1217 y en 1230 de León, asegurando la unificación de ambos reinos. Su abundante historia militar comienza en 1224 con la toma de Quesada y, más tarde, en 1227 con la toma de Baeza. Todas sus conquistas están relacionadas con hechos de carácter religioso, aquí se realiza una aproximación a su vida y a sus gestas que hicieron recuperar para la cruz de Cristo tierras y caminos de manos infieles.
