As with a marriage or a birth, a death occurring in a group can be an opportunity to strengthen the cohesion of the family or of the social group. This article studies the strategies used by French immigrants in San Francisco to ascertain their position in the ethnic group. For this study, I used the archives (1916-1930) of a San Francisco undertaker whose customers were predominantly French. These migrants reunited around the performance of traditional practices they brought from France, but at the same time they adapted them to local constraints. Shifting to another scale, the death of a community leader revealed the symbolic structure of the ethnic group. After Raphaël Weill's death in 1920, formal declarations and the organization of commemorative ceremonies were aimed at gathering all members of the community around a common French-Californian identity similar to the one exemplified by the deceased.

Tout autant que le mariage ou la naissance, la mort est l'occasion de réaffirmer la cohésion familiale ou sociale. À partir des archives d'une entreprise de Pompes funèbres de San Francisco dont la clientèle est très majoritairement française, l'article analyse les stratégies par lesquelles les immigrants déterminent leur place dans la société ethnique, la période d'observation étant 1916-1930. Les migrants reproduisent les pratiques traditionnelles de leur milieu d'origine, qui leur permettent de se reconnaître semblables, tout en les adaptant aux contraintes locales. La mort en 1920 de Raphaël Weill, le doyen, permet, en changeant d'échelle, d'étudier la structuration symbolique de la colonie autour de ses dirigeants. Les déclarations convenues et l'organisation des cérémonies visent à ressouder la colonie par l'affirmation d'une adhésion à une identité franco-californienne exemplifiée par le défunt.
