In diesem Aufsatz werden drei wichtige lateinische Episteln in Versform neu bewertet : Angilbert 2 ; Theodulf 25 ; Alcuin 26. Durch die Einbeziehung zeit-genössischer Inszenierungstheorien wird die althergebrachte Sicht in Frage gestellt, wonach diese Episteln benutzt werden können, um die Rivalitäten und Feindseligkeiten am Karolinischen Hof authentisch zu dokumentieren. Der Aufsatz argumentiert, diese eher im Licht der mimetischen Dichtung des Virgilianischen Hirtengedichtes mit seinen Doppelelementen von Lobrede und Beschimpfung zu sehen.

This article offers a detailed re-appraisal of three major Latin verse-epistles: Angilbert 2; Theodulf 25; Alcuin 26. Utilising contemporary notions of performance theory, it challenges the accepted view that these verse-epistles can be used to provide straightforward factual documentation of rivalries and enmities at the Carolingian court. It argues that they should rather be viewed in the light of the mimetic fiction of the Virgilian eclogue with its twin strands of panegyric and invective.

Cet article propose une relecture de trois importantes épîtres en vers latins – Angilbert 2, Theodulf 25 et Alcuin 26 – remettant en question leur statut de témoins fiables des rivalités et conflits à la cour carolingienne. À la lumière des théories de la représentation, ces épîtres s’avèrent relever plutôt de la fiction mimétique de l’éclogue virgilienne, alliant panégyrique et invective.
