    This paper will analyze,, from an interdisciplinary perspective, the metaphor of imperial renovation in Portugal in the 15th and 16th centuries. The image of the renovatio Romae, which was utilized in different historical contexts, did not seem to find a strong reverberation on Lusitanian soil.

    The new protagonism of the Atlantic - to the detriment of the Mediterranean - as a center of economical, political and cultural strength in the modern world, on the one hand, and the clash between the authority of the ancients and the empirical experience acquired during the navigations, on the other, could be understood as obstacles for the creation of a relation of continuity between the idea of Rome and the image that Lisbon, as caput of the new Lusitanian power, aimed at creating for itself

    Esse artigo analisará a metáfora da renovação imperial no âmbito da história portuguesa dos séculos XV e XVI. A imagem da renovatio Romae - utilizada em distintos momentos históricos - não parece ter encontrado uma forte reverberação em solo lusitano. O novo protagonismo do Atlântico - em detrimento do Mediterrâneo - como centro de forças econômicas, políticas e culturais no mundo moderno, de um lado, e o embate entre a autoridade dos antigos e a experiência empírica adquirida durante as navegações, de outro, podem ser compreendidos como obstáculos para o estabelecimento de uma relação de continuidade entre a ideia de Roma e a imagem que Lisboa, como caput da nova potência lusitana, pretendia criar para si mesma.
