  Mais occupe-toi d'Amélie. Trolz der vorschiedensten Verwcndungsarten des Binde-wortes mais (aber), wie es in einem Dialog vorkommt, behält es oine grundsätzlich gleichbloibonde Bedeutung, die jener gleichkommt, die es in fortlaufenden Texten hat. Das kann man nachweisen, indem man die unterschiedlichen Verwendungsarten von mais in den zwei ersten Szenen des Stückes Occupe-toi d'Amélie klassifiziert. Die verschiedenen Rubriken lassen nicht verschiedene mais aufscheinen, sondern verschiedene Verwendungszusammenhänge einer invarianten seniantischen Bedeutung. Dabei muss man aber den Begriff des Verwendungszusammenhanges erweitern und,ausser der expliziten Umgebung, Einstellungen, Meinungen und unausgesprochene Selbstverständlichkeiten miteinbeziehen.

  Mais occupe-toi d'Amélie. Despite the great variety of ways in which it is used, the conjunction mais (but) , when it appears in dramatic dialogue, maintains a permanent, basic value, analogous to that which it has in continuous texts. This is shown by means of classification of the occurrences of mais in the first two scenes of Occupe toi d'Amélie, a play of Feydeau. Indeed, the rubrics employed in this classification lead to the recognition, not that there are different mais, but rather that there are different conditions governing the use of a single invariant semantic value. This finding requires us, howewer, to broaden the notion of context to include, beyond the explicit environment, underlying at titudes, opinions, and (supposedly self-evident) "facts". analogous to that which it has in continuous texts.   Malgré la très grande variété des emplois qui en sont faits, la conjonction mais , telle qu'elle apparaît dans le dialogue, garde une valeur fondamentale permanente -analogue à celle qu'elle possède dans les textes suivis. On le montre en tentant une classification des occurrences de mais dans les deux premières scènes de Occupe-toi d'Amélie. Les rubriques distinguées amènent à reconnaître, en effet, non pas différents mais, mais différentes conditions d'application d'une valeur sémantique invariante. Ceci exige, toutefois, que l'on élargisse la notion de contexte en y introduisant, outre l'environnement explicite, des attitudes, opinions et "évidences" sous-jacentes.
