Resumen de Le Grecs de Marseille et les inventissements industriels transméditerranéens au XIXe siècle

  This article analyses the role of Greek entrepreneurs in the industrialization of the Mediterranean basin from unpublished archives of the Zafiropulos and Zarifis, two of the largest Greek families in nineteenth-century Marseille. While remaining attached to the commercial and banking activities, these families invested in the industry in Ukraine, the Ottoman Empire, Spain, Greece, and especially in Marseille where they financed the development of several innovative industries such as oil and electricity. They also had industrial assets in the rest of France, Northern Russia, Britain, the US and South Africa. The entrepreneurial path of the Zafiropulos and Zarifis therefore enriches the interpretation of the industrialization process in the Mediterranean basin. Between the picture of a Mediterranean industrialization greatly depending on the industrial groups of Northwest Europe, and that of an industrialization driven by Mediterranean investors but restricted to a specific space and time, the investments of the Zarifis and Zafiropulos show a third way where Mediterranean entrepreneurs were involved in the industrialization of several Mediterranean and European areas.

  Cet article analyse le rôle des entrepreneurs Grecs dans l’industrialisation du bassin méditerranéen à partir des archives inédites des Zarifi et Zafiropulo, deux des plus grandes familles grecques de Marseille du xixe siècle. Tout en restant attachées aux activités commerciales et bancaires, ces familles investissent dans l’industrie en Ukraine, dans l’Empire ottoman, en Espagne, en Grèce et surtout à Marseille où elles financent l’essor de plusieurs branches innovantes comme le pétrole et l’électricité. Elles possèdent aussi des actifs industriels dans le reste de la France, en Russie du Nord, en Grande-Bretagne, aux États-Unis et en Afrique du Sud. Le parcours entrepreneurial des Zarifi et des Zafiropulo permet donc d’enrichir les interprétations du processus d’industrialisation du bassin méditerranéen. Entre l’image d’une industrialisation méditerranéenne très dépendante des groupes industriels de l’Europe du Nord-Ouest, et celle d’une industrialisation portée par des investisseurs méditerranéens mais limitée dans un espace/temps bien précis, les investissements des Zarifi et des Zafiropulo illustrent une troisième voie : celle des entrepreneurs méditerranéens impliqués dans l’industrialisation de plusieurs espaces méditerranéens et européens.
