El relato en la narrativa femenina anglosajona finisecular (1880-1895): George Egerton, Kate Chopin y Charlotte Perkins Gilman

    Durante las dos últimas décadas del siglo xix, el relato fue uno de los géneros literarios más populares de la literatura inglesa. Las características propias del género, como son la brevedad, la intensidad, la fragmentación, la flexibilidad, la introspección y la subjetividad hicieron que los escritores vieran en el relato un medio idóneo para la experimentación y la innovación técnica.

    Las escritoras contribuyeron en gran medida al apogeo de este género literario, pues escribieron muchos relatos y de gran calidad. Este artículo analiza las posibles causas de este fenómeno literario, profundizando en la relación existente entre la propia naturaleza del relato y la creatividad femenina, tomando como ejemplos algunas de las obras de la británica George Egerton (1859- 1945) y las norteamericanas Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860-1935) y Kate Chopin (1850-1904).

    During the last two decades of the nineteenth century the short story became one of the most popular literary genres in English Literature. The characteristics of the short story, such as the brevity, the intensity, the fragmentation, the flexibility and the introspection encouraged many writers to consider the short story as a proper instrument for experimentation and technical innovation. Women writers contributed deeply to the popularity of this literary genre, as they wrote many short stories of high quality. This article analyses the possible causes of this literary phenomenon deepening on the relationship between the nature of the short story and feminine creativity showing as examples some of the works by the British writer George Egerton (1859-1945) and the American writers Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860-1935) and Kate Chopin (1850-1904).
