El inicio de la construcción de una Catedral era el comienzo de una obra a veces de siglos. Eran imprescindibles las reparaciones, las reconstrucciones o las puestas al día desde una perspectiva estética o iconográfica, porque a lo largo de los tiempos cambiaban no sólo los gustos sino también los mensajes que la Iglesia quería transmitir que aun siendo básicamente los mismos se matizaban según el periodo histórico y las preocupaciones esenciales de cada momento. Los fieles, que oraban y recibían en estos templos las enseñanzas de la fe, las tenían presentes no sólo a través de la palabra sino también por los ejemplos visualizados en las figuras de los santos que en pórticos, frescos murales y retablos se mostraban como modelos de conducta en esta vida a la espera del tránsito definitivo y de la Segunda Venida. Pero estos notables edificios, además de los intentos prioritarios de transmisión de verdades religiosas, también, en muchos casos, acabaron por convertirse en magníficos vehículos de transmisión de valores más mundanos. En definitiva, las catedrales se nos presentan como auténticos palimpsestos en los que las formas y los mensajes se fueron superponiendo generación tras generación y en los que los motivos que llevaron a los promotores a impulsar ciclos y representaciones individuales fueron diversos y cambiantes en el tiempo

The beginning of the construction of a Cathedral was the beginning of a work sometimes of centuries. The repairs, the reconstructions or the bring up to date were essential from an aesthetic or iconographic perspective, because throughout the times they changed not only to the tastes but also the messages that the Church wanted to transmit that even being basically the same the historical period and the essential preoccupations of every moment were clarified according to. The faithfuls, who prayed and received in these temples the lessons of the faith, had presents not only through the word but also by the examples visualized in the figures of the saints who in porches, fresh murals and altarpieces were like models of conduct in this life in the hope of the definitive transit and of the Second Coming. But these remarkable buildings, besides the high-priority attempts of transmission of religious truths, also, in many cases, finished becoming magnificent vehicles of transmission of more worldly values. Really, the cathedrals appear us like authentic palimpsestos in which the forms and the messages went superposing generation after generation and in which the reasons that took to the promoters to impel individual cycles and representations were diverse and money changers in the time
