Resumen de Exploring kiwiness: I(s)landscapes in "The Loners" and "History for Berliners"

Pascale de Souza

  • The best-known New Zealand writer today is also one whose kiwiness has elicited much controversy. Katherine Mansfield, credited with a leading role in the art of short story writing, spent her adult years away from her country of birth and offered in her writings a perspective on it steeped into her childhood memories and infused with eurocentric views. Size, lack of history, and distance from Europe were the challenges she perceived as facing New Zealand in its search for identity.

Seventy years later, the challenges facing Aotearoa are no longer solely defined by its positioning as a former British colony but encompass its role as a South Pacific colonizer.
