Un jesuita ante la Inquisición: el proceso del padre Jerónimo Dutari y los desencuentros respecto al problema de la conversión en la Compañía de Jesús a principios del siglo XVIII

    El padre Jerónimo Dutari (1671-1717) fue uno de los más destacados misioneros jesuitas del siglo XVIII. Adoptó el estilo implantado por el padre Jerónimo López en las misiones populares y quienes le sucedieron en la tarea apostólica adoptaron en cierta medida sus doctrinas. En 1710 fue denunciado ante el tribunal de la Inquisición de Logroño, tras predicar varios sermones durante la Cuaresma. Estas delaciones procedieron de jesuitas residentes en el colegio de dicha ciudad, quienes afirmaron que el misionero jesuita seguía opiniones jansenistas. La respuesta que el padre Dutari elaboró en su defensa, así como el estudio de sus sermones y la documentación inquisitorial revelan su alejamiento de las posturas laxistas y su proximidad a algunas de las tesis defendidas por los rigoristas. De hecho insistió en la necesidad de un cambio de vida y en la contrición, que consideró los objetivos de la misión y de las prácticas devotas.

    Father Jerónimo Dutari (1671-1717) was one of the most prominent Jesuit missionaries of the Eighteenth Century. He adopted, as other jesuits, the style that father Jerónimo López used in his popular missions. In 1710, after preaching some sermons during Lent he was reported to the tribunal of the Inquisition of Logroño. The complaints came from various of the residents in the Jesuit college of the city, who claimed that the Jesuit missionary followed jansenist's theses. The response that the father Dutari wrote in his defense, as well as the study of his sermons and the inquisitorial documentation, reveal that he took distance from laxism identified insistently with the Jesuit Order by the antijesuits. This attitude confirm the proximity of Dutari's messages to some of the assertions of the rigorists. In fact, he insisted in the necessity of a change of life and the contrition, which he considered the main goals of the mission and the devote practices.
