Resumen de "Ennoblecimiento" y "elitización" de los comerciantes gaditanos entre los siglos XVIII y XIX: análisis a partir de los ingresos en la Real Armada

Durante el siglo XVIII numerosos comerciantes gaditanos se enriquecieron y buscaron ascender socialmente adoptando rasgos nobiliarios. A partir de la segunda mitad del siglo estas familias comenzaron a mostrar mayor interés por la educación de sus hijos y procuraron proporcionarles carreras alternativas a los negocios. Examinaremos este proceso, que hemos llamado elitización, a través de los ingresos en la Real Armada. Pretendemos destacar cómo las carreras de servicio a la Monarquía van adquiriendo mayor relevancia social porque permiten a sus miembros, y sus familias, formar parte de las estructuras de poder y adquirir una nueva identidad que los situarán en los estratos más altos de la sociedad.

During the eighteenth century many Cadiz merchants were enriched and tried to rise socially adopting nobility features. From the second half of this century these families began to show more interest in their children’s education and try to provide alternative careers. I examine this process, which I have called elitization, through their entries in the Royal Navy. I intend to highlight how the service careers were becoming more socially relevant as it allows its members, and their families, became part of power structures and acquired a new identity that really positioned at the highest strata of society.
