Poco tiene que ver la placidez del viaje marítimo actual, en el que imperan la seguridad, rapidez y confort, con la aventura de aquellos esforzados navegantes que durante siglos surcaron mares desconocidos e insólitos. Aparte los viajes exploratorios y de conquista de la antigüedad, es de Europa de donde parten desde el siglo XV las más vastas iniciativas colonizadoras, producto de las profundas transformaciones políticas, técnicas, científicas, etc. acaecidas. No hay que olvidar aquí el importante papel desempeñado por los navegantes hispanos cuya vocación marinera contribuyó al estudio de los diversos factores que influyen en la navegación: fuerza de las mareas, violencia de los vientos, radiación térmica del sol, contactos oceánicos, icebergs, escarcha, etc. Estos conocimientos, y la aparición en el siglo XIX del barco de vapor, desvelaron lo que aún restaba de misterioso en el mar y propiciaron un cambio de signo en el viaje marítimo. Efectivamente, a los fines comerciales se añadieron los meramente lúdicos, recreativos, al tiempo que se perdía su carácter minoritario para abarcar a ámbitos cada vez más amplios de población.
