La investigación de la expresión artística del horror bélico añade a las preguntas generales sobre la expresión del horror otras específicas debido a sus condicionantes éticos. Al enfrentarnos a obras que evocan el sufrimiento real desbordamos las cuestiones referidas únicamente a lo estético y ficcional, viéndonos obligados a responder también a interrogantes morales: ¿cuándo es legítima la representación de este tipo de dolor? El objetivo del texto es explicitar esos condicionantes éticos, relacionándolos con las estrategias artísticas que buscan una representación veraz del horror de la guerra, una línea que inaugura Goya y que lleva a su acabamiento Otto Dix.

Research on the artistic expression of the horrors of war adds some issues of its own to the general questions about horror expression due to its ethical constraints. When facing works that evoke actual suffering, we are not only addressing aesthetical and fictional issues, but there is a need to tackle some moral questions as well: when is it legitimate to depict this type of pain? The goal of this paper is to clearly state such ethical constraints by connecting them to the artistic strategies that search for an accurate representation of the horrors of war, a path opened by Goya and ended by Otto Dix.
