The object of this work is to analyse the characteristics that could define the energy geopolitics or geopolinergy in the Arctic Region. This objective is carried out firstly by examining the concept of energy geopolitics in the Arctic in connection with other similar concepts, not only in the conceptual frame of the Arctic Region, but also in its relationship with and interdependence from other regions in the world, especial-ly the European Union and the Atlantic Basin.The work also pinpoints the potential of energy resources and reserves of each one of the countries that constitute what is known as the Arctic Council, and the aggre-gate potential that would result if the region is considered as a whole.The geopolitical expression of energy in the Arctic also emphasises another aspect of great importance, which is the opening up of transport routes and the develop-ment of the equipment and infrastructures needed to allow for the transit of energy resources in the future.This work draws attention to what is referred to as the Arctic energy paradox, which synthesises the possibility of having available huge volumes of energy re-sources, amounting to almost one third of the world's existing hydrocarbon re-serves, while at the same time pointing out that their use would basically be the cause of serious and widespread environmental degradation in the zone. The work likewise deals with certain aspects of energy governance in the Arctic, the underlying conflicts where public international law is concerned and the possible courses of action to be taken to improve both aspects.

El presente trabajo tiene por objeto analizar las características que pudieran de-finir la geopolítica energética o geopolinergia en la región ártica. Dicho propósito se lleva a cabo, en primer término, examinando el concepto de geopolítica de la energía en el Ártico, en conexión con otros conceptos análogos, tanto en el ámbito conceptual de la región ártica, como en su relación e interdependencia con otras regiones del mundo, en particular la Unión Europea y la cuenca atlántica.Asimismo, el trabajo identifica el potencial de recursos y reservas energéticas de que disponen cada uno de los países que constituyen el llamado Consejo Ártico, y el que agregadamente se puede deducir de la región en su conjunto.La expresión geopolítica de la energía en el Ártico subraya otra vertiente de gran importancia, cual es la apertura de las rutas de transporte y el desarrollo de los equipamientos e infraestructuras necesarias para hacer posible en el futuro el tránsito de recursos energéticos.Este trabajo llama la atención sobre lo que se denomina «la paradoja energética del Ártico», que sintetiza la posibilidad de disponer de ingentes volúmenes de recursos energéticos, llegando a sumar casi un tercio de las reservas existentes en materia de hidrocarburos a nivel mundial, acreditando, sin embargo, que su utilización trae causa fundamentalmente de la gravedad y alcance del deterioro ambiental de la zona. El trabajo también apunta determinados aspectos de la gobernanza energética en el Ártico, los conflictos subyacentes en el orden del derecho público internacional, y las líneas de desarrollo o de eventual mejora de ambos aspectos.
