Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial (1939-1945), marinos vascos de ambos lados del Bidasoa combatieron juntos, por primera vez en muchos siglos, en el mismo bando y en la misma unidad: las Fuerzas Navales Francesas Libres. En su seno se organizó además una primera unidad militar vasca, el 3er. Batallón de Fusileros Marinos, fruto del acuerdo entre el Consejo Nacional de Euzkadi y la Francia Libre. Presiones inglesas obligaron a disolver el batallón, pero tanto este intento de participación colectiva, como el acuerdo firmado tuvieron una gran significación histórica.

During World War II (1939-1945), Basque sailors on both sides of the Bidasoa fought side-by-side for the first time in many centuries, in the same army and the same unit: the Free French Navy. It also created the first Basque military unit: the 3rd Battalion of Marine Fusiliers, which came from an agreement reached by between the National Council of the Basque Country and Free France. British pressure led to the dissolution of the battalion, but both the attempted collective participation and the agreement that was signed were of great historical relevance.

Bigarren Mundu Gerran (1939-1945), Bidasoako bi ertzetako euskal marinelak elkarren ondoan borrokatu ziren, estreinako aldiz mende askotan, alde berean eta unitate berean: Frantziako Itsas Indar Libreak. Haren baitan antolatu zen, gainera, lehen euskal unitate militar bat, Itsas Fusilarien 3. Batailoia, Euzkadiko Kontseilu Nazionalaren eta Frantzia Librearen arteko akordioaren emaitza bera. Presio ingelesak zirela-eta, desegin behar izan zen batailoia, baina bai parte hartze kolektiborako saio hark bai sinatutako akordioak garrantzi historiko handia izan zuten.
