After years of work on the subject, French historian Cristophe Charle presents an essay on comparative history about the European intellectuals in the nineteenth century. This study gives priority to the atlantic Europe, centred on the range of Great Britain-France-Germany, relegating to a second plane the eastern and mediterranean worlds. His definition of an intellectual is highly conditioned by some general socioprofessional criteria that create a great deal of problems when we approach the particular individuals beyond statistics.
