In this paper the different facies and names of the Triassic in the Betic Cordillera are discussed. Emphasis is placed on problems posed by the study of Betic basin facies and palaeogeographic domains. The Betic basin, during the Triassic, was between the Iberian and Mesomediterranean Plates. Most deposits were coastal and shallow-marine sediments which were deposited in an extensive and varied palaeogeography. Although the types of Triassic facies of those sediments are very different, there are many similarities in the main stratigraphic features which help to relate the palaeogeographic domains to each other. The Triassic epicontinental shallow marine sediments were present in both continental palaeomargins in the Betic Basin: "Sudiberic" and "Mesomediterranean". It is possible to recognize the Buntsandtein, Muschelkalk and Keuper facies in both domains, in the present day, in the External and the Internal Zones of the Betic Cordillera. In the Internal Zone, the alpine facies outcrops as well, mainly during Upper Triassic. In this age even this facies is present in the External Zone.
