Origen de la asociación de minerales de la arcilla del Permo-Triásico del Desert de les Palmes (Castellón).: Relación con la alteración del zócalo hercínico

    • D The XRD analysis of the Permo-Triassic mudrocks from Desert de les Palmes area (Castellón) reveals a predominand illite + kaolin assemblages in the three lithological units. Minor chlorite and l/S mixed-layer minerals are also found in the lower unit. Clay mineral distribution in mudrock beds along the section in characterized by a clear sedimentary pattern. Kaolin minerals accumulate in the bottom of the lower unit (up to 70% of the clay fraction) and progressively disappear upwards. A well correlation between maximum percentages of kaolin minerals, chlorite and C/S mixed layer minerals is also observed in the lower unit. Illite increases towards the of the lower unit, being the main component in the middle unit and nearly the sole clay mineral in the upper unit. Clay minerals distribution in the Permo-Triassic form Desert de les Palmes points to an inherited origin of the reported assemblages. The presence of kaolinite is interpreted to be the effect of progressive denudation of kaolinitic weathering profiles development in the sourece area. The increase of illite in the middle and upper units reflects the increase in the sedimentary supply from-low metamorphic rocks.
