La noticia es una obra protegida por el sistema de derecho de autor que presenta determinadas particularidades legales. Las nuevas características que impone Internet han hecho que las normas jurídicas y la jurisprudencia se enfrenten a nuevos casos que requieren de una interpretación flexible de las leyes de propiedad intelectual. Al mismo tiempo, los organismos internacionales han provocado un movimiento de armonización legal que, pese a todo, aún presenta problemas de ajuste en los dos grandes sistemas jurídicos: la Common law y la Civil law.

News writing is protected by a special system of author rights, legally distinct from others. New realities imposed by the Internet have brought laws, regulations and jurisprudence into conflict with new cases that require a flexible interpretation of intellectual property rights. International organizations have movements underway to reconcile both laws and the new realities. Despite efforts, however, properly fitting any changes into the two largest legal systems (Common law and Civil law) remains a problem.
