¿Se puede hablar de una retrospectiva del arte conceptual ? Respecto a los distintos relatos y ejes interpretativos que se ejercitaron conjuntamente sobre este objeto de estudio, parece en adelante adquirido que nadie podría conjugar aquella en singular. Ahora bien, esta declinación múltiple afectó rápidamente a la discutible homogeneidad de un fenómeno que terminó por ser sepultado por el carácter profundamente divergente de sus exégesis.
En efecto, lejos de enriquecer el conocimiento del arte conceptual, la suma de las lecturas tuvo por consecuencia de neutralizar toda legibilidad. De Lucy Lippard a Alexander Alberro, se analizarán y volverán a poner en perspectiva las contribuciones de autores, a comenzar por las que figuran en catálogos de exposiciones clave, que supieron considerar este fenómeno con una mirada a veces nostálgica, hagiográfica y también demistificadora.
La cuestión que uno inclinaría por lo tanto a plantearse es la siguiente : ¿ Existió realmente el arte conceptual ?

Is it possible to speak of a history of conceptual art? An examination of the diverse narratives and angles of interpretation applied to the study of conceptual art seems to reveal that its history cannot be treated in the singular. The multiplication of interpretations has rapidly undermined the already questionable homogeneity of a phenomenon which has been overwhelmed by the profoundly divergent character of its exegeses. Far from enriching our knowledge of conceptual art, the sum total of these readings has had the effect of neutralizing its legibility. From Lucy Lippard to Alexander Alberro, the contributions of various authors will be analyzed and reevaluated, beginning with those published in the catalogues of landmark exhibitions, which bring to the phenomenon of conceptual art visions ranging from nostalgic to hagiographic to demystifying. In light of these circumstances, it is tempting to ask the following question: did conceptual art ever really exist?

Peut-on parler d’une histoire de l’art conceptuel ? Au regard des différents récits et axes interprétatifs qui se sont greffés sur cet objet d’étude, il semble désormais acquis que nul ne saurait conjuguer celleci au singulier. Or cette déclinaison multiple a rapidement porté atteinte à la discutable homogénéité d’un phénomène qui a fini par être enseveli par le caractère profondément divergent de ses exégèses.
En effet, loin d’enrichir la connaissance de l’art conceptuel, la somme des lectures a eu pour conséquence d’en neutraliser toute lisibilité. De Lucy Lippard à Alexander Alberro, seront analysées et remises en perspective les contributions d’auteurs, à commencer par celles figurant dans des catalogues d’expositions-clés, qui ont su porter sur ce phénomène des regards tantôt nostalgiques, hagiographiques mais aussi démystificateurs. La question qu’on serait dès lors tenté de se poser est la suivante : L’art conceptuel a-t-il réellement existé ?
