The paper presented an historical overview of the rise of hypnosis during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The principal controversies and characters are highlighted, taking into consideration the historical and social context. The factors that contributed to the downfall of hypnosis as a legitimate clinical procedure during the first decades of the twentieth century are also covered, among these, the role played by Freud and the psychoanalytic, movement in dismissing hypnosis as of no clinical value. Finally, some of the main trends in hypnosis occurring over the last three decades are discussed, and some examples of recent approaches of various eminent psychologists to hypnosis are outlined.
