  • Resumen
    • The author suggests that the Theory of human Communication, which has been extensively used in family therapy, can fruitfully be adapted by Puerto Rican industrial-organizational psychologists as a strategic intervention in different programs that pursue organizational change as well as a general theoretical guideline. The different assumptions contained in the theory of human communication appear to offer useful strategies for the management of conflicts between individuals and groups in the workplace. The theory´s utility consists of its efforts to modify the behaviors, cognitions and perceptions of the individual within their own interactional systems. The author notes the superiority of this theory over many of the models currently in use in industrial-organizational psychology which are based on linear causality, such as operant and classical conditioning models. These approaches do not offer an integrative or systemic intervention capable of producing change in an organization. the author presents some theoretical ideas proposed by Bateson and Elkaim and discusses the possible implications of such systemic approaches for industrial-organizational psychology.
