  • Objective: To evaluate the use of piperacillin/tazobactam (P/T) and, in special, its role in the treatment of abdominal infection in a general hospital. Material and methods: The study was carried out at the Corporació Parc Tauli from Sabadell. The use of P/T was analyzed during the years 2000 and 2001. The sensitivities to isolated microorganisms were tested from 2000 to 2002. Results: 648 patients have been treated with P/T, 271 in the year 2000 and 377 in 2001. The most frequent pathology for which it was prescribed was located in digestive system. The department that most frequently prescribed it was Digestive Surgery, goingfrom 60 patients in 2000 to 102 in 2001. From 167 patients diagnosed with peritonitis, 52 received P/T. It has been observed a significant increase in the number of patients with biliar tract pathology that have been prescribed with P/T in 2001 with respect to 2000. P/T was associated with amikacin in 100 infectious episodes, being the most frequent diagnoses nosocomial pneumonia and infection by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It was observed a good « in vitro» activity against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. The sensitivity rate to E. coli is kept above 96% and to P. aeruginosa above 90%. Conclusions: P/T is a wide spectrum antibiotic used in the treatment of abdominal infection, fever in the neutropenic patient, nosocomial pneumonia and infection by Pseudomonas. In our hospital the most frequent indication was for abdominal infection
