La descomunal crisis económica-financiera provocada por la "gran recesión" que data de mediados de 2008 ha confirmado que tanto el empleo formal como la seguridad social a él atada también se hallan en crisis. Es necesario comenzar a reconceptualizar la seguridad social con miras a afrontar los enormes desafíos que presentará el siglo XXI, siendo entonces urgente reconceptualizarle para determinar qué es hoy en día el servicio público de la seguridad social, para qué debe servirnos y a quiénes debe proteger, qué seguros debe contener y qué prestaciones en dinero o especie otorgará, pero sobre todo habrá que definir cómo debe ser financiada. En cualquier caso, se afirma que México aún está a tiempo de salvar su sistema nacional de seguridad social antes de que éste comience a colapsar.

The massive economic and financial crisis caused by the "Great Recession" that dates back to the mid-2008, has confirmed that both formal employment and social security attached to it are in crisis too. It is necessary to re-conceptualize the social security in order to meet the enormous challenges the twenty-first century presents, which makes urgent to re-conceptualize the social security as a public service, the benefits it should offer and who should be protected with, the insurances taht should include and the rational cash benefits or in kind that would grant and mostly it its unavoidable to define the financing. Mexico is on time to save their social security system before the collapse begins.
