    La armada dirigida por Pedro de Estopiñán, contador del duque de Medina Sidonia, ocupó la ciudad de Melilla en septiembre de 1497. Los expedicionarios se instalaron en el interior de la fortificación medieval existente. El 14 de abril de 1498 los Reyes Católicos encargaron la tenencia de Melilla al duque de Medina Sidonia. Para vigilar el cumplimiento del acuerdo enviaron a un veedor. En el alarde de Luis Méndez de Figueredo, realizado a finales de mayo o principios de junio de 1948, se describe por vez primera la ciudad y se constata que las fortificaciones estaban bien provistas de artillería.

    The warships lead by Pedro de Estopiñán, accountant of the duke of Medina Sidonia, occupy the city of Melilla on September 1497. The members of the expedition settle in the interior of an existent medieval fortification. On the 14 of April 1498 the Catholic Monarchs entrusted the landholding of Melilla to the duke of Medina Sidonia. To keep an eye on the fulfillment of the agreement, they sent an overseer. On the list made by Luis Méndez de Figueredo, towards the end of May or the beginning of June 1498, the city is described for the first time and confirms that the fortifications were well supplied with artillery.
