    Los servicios de telecomunicación, que llevan operando ya más de cien años, han dado un giro transcendental a la sociedad. desde el teléfono y la televisión a las denominadas autopistas de la información son múltiples los servicios que se han desarrollado. Algunos, de enorme éxito popular; otros, como el videotex, de éxito más limitado, e incluso otros, como el teletex y el vídeo-teléfono, de escasísimo éxito. El futuro de las telecomunicaciones, en que se mezclan muchas tecnologías, parece inminente, pero su auge dependerá del dinero que se invierta en ello. En Europa, el IV Programa Marco de I+D redefine los objetivos y prioridades de este sector.

    Telecommunications services have already been operating for more than a hundred years and have given society an important new direction. From the telephone and television to the socalled information highways, many are the services, which have been developed. Some have been enormously successful whereas others, such as videotex, have met with only limited success and still others, including teletex and video-telephone, have failed to catch on. A boom in telecommunications, combining many technologies, appears imminent, but its success will depend on the amount of money invested in it. In Europe, the IVth R&D Framework Programme redefines the objectives and priorities of this sector.
