Resumen de Study of the appropriateness of parenteral nutrition prescribing of hospitalized patients in a regional hospital

  • The study was performed to check the adequacy of parenteral nutrition prescription to current recommendations in nonsurgical inpatients. To check this adjustment, we carried out a retrospective study in 2012 of all patients admitted to the internal medicine and Intensive Care Unit (ICU). For each patient with Parenteral Nutrition (PN) we revised if they could have been a candidate for Enteral Nutrition (EN) or otherwise only should continue with PN, based on current recommendations and according to their diagnosis. Along the studied period, we reviewed 30 patients in total with parenteral nutrition and based on the above criteria, 18 of these patients were candidates for enteral nutrition, which represents 60% of all the studied patients. This discrepancy is probably due to the outdated methods of the physicians and their approach in the adoption of the new recommendations, issue that we should encourage
