The Guatemalan territory is home to hydrographic Basins fed by international waters that flow to its neighboring countries.
The conservation and protection of these watercourses has been solely Guatemala's responsibility, while the riparian countries on the lower reaches of the hydrographic basins do not equally cooperate or share this responsibility.
The watercourses are being afected by the growth of populations demanding more water for their legitimate needs: consumption, irrigation, etc. and by the Climate Change causing shorter and stronger winters, longer and drier summers; therefore, coastal countries located on the high and lower reaches of the basins must accept through international agreements, their joint economic responsibility in order to equally contribute to reforesting the hydrological basins and to building infrastructure to regulate the water flows and protect the international water bodies.
